Here’s an idea: open the borders AND give people decent work condition.

RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 1 day agoSomehow other countries manage without abusing illegal immigrantion on such a massive scale. Hell, some places have all those workers unionized.

Opening borders is a good way to ensure decent working conditions are never achieved since there’s a constant influx of people coming in willing to work for less. And you royally screw over the workers who are already living there.
Might suck for the origin country too if all the people are drained from there to work abroad. But that’s a larger topic.

ask yourself why these people are willing to come to work for less.

The US? But I’m all for improving the work conditions at the source country, I’m just improving much if the company at my local area decides to replace us with immigrant workers to save on money and worker demands. Now the local workers are out of job. Not something most want to do out of solidarity.

You threat the wealth gap between poor and rich country as if it was unsolvable and fatality, which is inherently racist. People who come aren’t weights and the only reason why they’re forced to undersell themselves is because of social stigma and segregation.
RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 1 day ago
I don’t think it’s unsolvable, plenty of countries have gone from poor to rich and some have gone the opposite way.
How is it racist, do you think only certain races are rich right now or what? Wealth isn’t tied to skin colour

More people also means more consumers and more people paying for stuff. Your racist idea of the third world being baby factories is deeply disturbing.
Just say you want to keep your first world privilege of being rich thanks to colonization.
RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 1 day ago
What baby factories are you talking about?
More people also means more consumers and more people paying for stuff.
I’m sure the owning class are happy about that but does nothing for workers, other than forcing them to fight for those jobs with people willing to take lower pay and suffer shittier conditions. But line must go up.

do those contries also share a 3,000 km border with Mexico?
RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 21 hours ago
Well that’s conveniently about the length of the Mediterranean border (in a straight line). Then you ofc would add the rest if you wanted to consider EU’s external border.
acosmichippo@lemmy.world 20 hours ago
yes because coastline is exactly the same thing as a land border.

I don’t know if you’ve heard but there was a big migrant crisis at the border at one point. Hasn’t hit the news now though. Water isn’t that much of a deterrent.
