Yes we talked about it months ago. I contacted them to see if they wanted volunteers. Their team is like 4 people including Vox. They never replied to me on Gab, and their FAQ/Roadmap was vague on their direction...
This new announcement by Larry seems more transparent IMHO. He is asking for an open competition to set up alternate systems... could be federated, plugin, whatever. He has been critical of Wiki, that he co founded with Wales for 10 years now
Its a lot of publicity, plus competition is always good, right ? I am kinda hoping this will bring fresh energy and maybe some working prototypes that everyone can try out...

My 2 cents is initially it could be simple... a torrent that runs in your browser
The torrent contains text files to overlay when you visit Wiki and small images. Small size and feeds the data to the WikiFail plugin
A Wolfballs like instance to upvote changes people think make sense, updates the torrent daily

A block chain would actually work fine as a wiki. Because a block chain is just a append only database. So would git.
I'm not sure how to handle left wing activist spending all their time being the editors and page lockers. People who value truth generally don't spend their whole life on wikipedia. trannies do though

Its good to have openness, even at the cost of vandalism. It removes lobbyists.
Problem with Wiki started when they gave a small circle of editors 100% power and ability to override new editors in the name of quality control. (See Crowder's expose on Wiki editor process : https://piped.kavin.rocks/watch?v=Iv7s_ydrdHE )
Lobbyists then offer these gatekeepers $$ for their accounts
