In DDT’s defense, it wasn’t harm to humans that got it banned, but rather that it thins the shells of birds’ eggs, disrupting their reproduction. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt people—I don’t know—but it’s this ecological harm that led to banning it.

That’s correct. I just looked it up and it doesn’t seem to harm humans, aside from some strong links to reproductive problems.
In the USA the ban on DDT started in 1972. I wonder where it stands in the rest of the world, as apparently India was still using it in 1986.
