Comment on UK Covid deaths are on the rise again, but keep calm and keen on shopping.
Why9@lemmy.world 1 year agomild virus.
My ignorant internet friend. 3 million dead people would disagree..
All the science is there. All the evidence that isolating works is there. All the evidence that COVID is killing people, especially the vulnerable, is there. What part of this don’t you get? The only reason COVID is weaker now is precisely because people isolated and let those strains die out.
But because you’re mildly inconvenienced, it’s somehow a massive conspiracy. Stop being a drone and read up on it. Use your head and take things seriously. It’s so exhausting to convince people their ignorance will literally kill people.

I’m so bored of people like you. Like you say, COVID is weaker, yet you’re linking the death toll from when it was actually a serious problem as though that applies today in equal measure.
Most people have moved on with their lives.

It’s like when a child grabs a pair of scissors and you need to politely educate them that it’s dangerous. We’re bored of it too, trust me. But we keep doing it because it saves lives.
It is weaker. Precisely because of the efforts of governments to isolate, observe social distancing and wear masks. If they’d done a better job to address it sooner, and if people like you chose being mildly inconvenienced over saving lives, who knows? COVID might have been eradicated altogether.
I’m simply highlighting the fact that it’s not a mild illness. People who are older, and those whose immune systems are weakened due to other diseases e.g. cancer are absolutely still dying of COVID. We’re in flu season, going into a cold winter. The governments aren’t enforcing lockdown and isolating and aren’t reporting the rise in COVID cases. Go to any hospital and ask them how bad it is already. People are still dying my dude.
At the height of COVID, there were people hooked up to respirators, still absolutely defiant that COVID even existed, refusing the vaccine even as it took their lives. Death by stupidity. I still can’t believe people like you exist. Take the virus seriously and it’ll disappear. Ignore it and governments will be forced to enforce lockdown again.

For the record, both my partner and I have kept up with our vaccine schedule, and both mask (I’m on immunosuppressive medication) - I’ve likely not caught it once, and he’s only caught it once, likely bc he got careless. I still travel fairly frequently, internationally. We go out, have fun. Neither of our lives have stopped, we’re just more careful. Keep our distance from others. As an added bonus, I don’t have to smell the underground anymore, at all. Personally masking is 100% worth it. Improved my health and his, and doesn’t really impede on us. Though I am tired of nurses asking if I’m I’ll bc I’m in a mask when I go in for appointments :/

Got to love how you just disengaged after I absolutely smashed your post. I still can’t believe you think social distancing is what caused the virus to evolve.

Things got busy so I haven’t been active for a while. I’m sorry waiting for my reply kept you up at night long enough that you were compelled to make a follow-up response /s
I doubt you smashed my post though. I’m not on Lemmy to ‘score points’ either. I want to advise, learn and be educated on topics that interest me. Others seemed to disagree with you so I’m not holding my breath lol, though in a well reasoned argument, there are always good points made on both sides and I’d be interested to get back to you on that.
I’m sure there is a strong correlation between social distancing and incidence rates of COVID. New Zealand did well to demonstrate that, despite a smaller population. I don’t believe it caused the virus to evolve. I do believe it caused the virus to devolve though; the virus kept mutating, but the most virulent stains coincided with the toughest social distancing measures. Nowadays the strain of COVID affects only the most vulnerable, and to most, its symptoms are akin to a cold, and therefore social distancing measures aren’t necessary.

This is not why it’s weaker, the virus evolved to a less virulent strain over time, as is to be expected. This didn’t happen BECAUSE of social distancing and masking. In fact, viruses evolve as they transmit.
This was never realistic. Zero COVID was never possible as many people were symptomless. The only way it would’ve happened is if the entire world locked down simultaneously with no exceptions even for key workers.
You are using the effects of an older, stronger strain on an unvaccinated population to make the point that it is still deadly today. Your data is not pertinent to 2023. Some people still die of COVID absolutely, these people are generally very ill anyway and a flu could probably have similar effects. As it stands COVID is no longer a national health emergency.
Are you seriously suggesting we lock down every single flu season? Lunacy of the highest order
I agree they were stupid at the height of COVID.
Why are you equating me to an anti vaccer or someone who has never taken the pandemic seriously? Nothing I have said has ever indicated that.
No it won’t and no they won’t. We aren’t in danger of any more lockdowns, we have vaccines and treatments. At this point for the vast majority of people in the country it is a mild illness.
