Comment on Infrastructure bill would require automakers to include breathalyzer technology in all new cars. This is how the state works. Toss in a provision for a fringe advocacy group and a company nobody's ever heard of into a 2700 page bill, because why the hell not?

The estimated cost from Intoxalock and their other competitors is $3/day (in perpetuity) + calibration services every 60 days.

The costs of drunk driving in the bill ($44 billion) are almost entirely associated with DUI compliance - fines, fees, and insurance costs. The actual property costs are significantly lower - I'm guessing something on the order of 1 billion. The cost of this bill to new cars will be at least 1000 to 2000 per car or 17 billion to 34 billion per year, or more if the IIDs require a perpetual subscription.
